Abstract

Hypothesis: The aim of the study is to establish relationship of quadriceps thickness with other markers of nutritional status and physical functioning in patients on maintenance hemodialysis.

Design of the Study: Cross Sectional Observational study.

Study Duration: 06 months from October 2023 to March 2024

Location of Study: Department of Medicine, CMH Abbottabad.

Methods: 155 hemodialysis patients were inducted and measured quadriceps thickness via ultrasound and evaluating nutritional, biochemical, and functional parameters. Standardized assessments and statistical analyses identified correlations and predictors of muscle thickness, ensuring reliable and consistent results. SPSS 26 was used and p value less than .05 was considered significant

Results: Quadriceps thickness in 155 hemodialysis patients showed strong interconnection with handgrip strength, gait speed, BMI, MAC, albumin, and inversely with STS-5 time. Regression analysis recognized HGS, MAC, and albumin as independent predictors, delineating 47% of variance.

Conclusion: Quadriceps thickness measured by ultrasound is a dependable indicator of nutritional status and physical function in hemodialysis patients. It harmonize firmly with BMI, mid-arm circumference, and albumin, and complements routine dialysis assessments, enabling more meticulous evaluation of muscle mass and personalized nutrition and rehabilitation planning.
