Abstract

Background


Needle prick Injury (NPI) also termed as sharp injury is a serious occupational problem in the health care system. It is the main cause of blood born disease and may also cause cancer if not treated. According to previous research every year, more than 35 million healthcare professionals worldwide are injured by needle sticks and sharp objects at work every year. Mostly NPIs cause the occupational infectious disease (86%) among health care workers.


Methodology


We have collected sample from 105 volunteer from Health Care Center Bajaur Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan. The aim of our study was to prevent needle prick injuries or sharp injuries among the health care workers and to aware the health care workers about diseases which are caused by needle prick injuries or sharp injuries. Also we want to investigate the percent injuries in the health care workers in the DHQ Hospital Bajaur Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.


 Results


 Our questionnaire base study conducted in the (OT) staff of DHQ Hospital Bajaur KPK were filled by 105 OT staff members. OT staff comprise of 91.4% male and 8.6% female. In our study OT staff are categorized into different occupation workers including 7.61% surgeon, 15.23% anesthesiologist, 36.19% OT technicians and 32.38 % nurse.


Conclusion


From our study we have concluded that about 63.80 % of the health care workers in the hospital of Bajaur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa exposed to NPI and 36.19 % were not get any NPI. The reason of high number of the NPI in the health care center of Bajaur may be because of the unavailability of safety measure and inadequate facilities. Most of the staff also have not knowledge about NPIs and don’t care in this regard.
