Abstract

Introduction: Antenatal care (ANC) is a crucial component of maternal healthcare that enhances the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby during pregnancy. Having good knowledge about prenatal care is important to prevent problems for both mothers and newborns by ensuring timely use of healthcare services, proper nutrition, immunization, and early recognition of pregnancy-related risks.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge about prenatal care among pregnant women at a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.

Methodology: A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted at Lahore General Teaching Hospital in Lahore over a period of four months. A sample of 100 pregnant women who visited the outpatient department for prenatal check-ups was selected using convenience sampling. Data was collected through structured questionnaires, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.

Findings: The study revealed that only 24% of the expectant mothers had a comprehensive understanding of prenatal care, while 76% lacked sufficient knowledge. Most participants (51%) fell within the 26–30 age group, followed by those aged 20–25 years (33%). The majority of the participants were from urban areas (57%) and belonged to middle-class families (45%).

Conclusion: The study found that most pregnant women had limited knowledge about prenatal care. The lack of significant association between demographic characteristics and knowledge levels suggests that women from various backgrounds generally have low awareness regarding maternal health.
