Abstract

Objective: To review  effects of high and low frequency of Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on upper limb spasticity and  its effects on functional ability in stroke patients.

Background: Most common problem reported in chronic stroke patients is post-stroke spasticity and loss of muscle strength which results in limitation in functional abilities including in both personnel and domestic activities of daily life consequently exerting adverse effects on patient’s mental health, well being and quality of life.

Methodology: A narrative review was conducted on previous research studies about the post-stroke spasticity,  its prevalence and effects on functional ability. Relevant studies focusing on treatment of spasticity mainly using TENS and its different parameters were also included.

Results: Results of studies were consistent with each other in finding that TENS is  effective in reducing spasticity and increasing the functional ability of paretic arm in stroke patients. It is emerging as non invasive, cheap and easily available modality for the management of spasticity and improving functional ability. Moreover previous studies have used different  TENS parameters, electrode placements and treatment duration.

Conclusion:  TENS  is easy and safe therapeutic method to improve functional ability in stroke patients. And there are effects of TENS in reducing post-stroke spasticity using different parameters. Thus it is an emerging and promising adjunct therapy for spasticity in stroke patients.
