Abstract

Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease and premature mortality worldwide, making its prevention and management a major public health priority. Along with pharmacological treatment, dietary modification has emerged as an effective non-pharmacological strategy for controlling blood pressure. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is a well-established eating pattern that emphasizes the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, legumes, nuts, and lean protein sources while limiting sodium, saturated fats, cholesterol, and processed foods. This review examines the role of the DASH diet in preventing hypertension by discussing its nutritional composition, underlying physiological mechanisms, and evidence supporting its effectiveness. The diet lowers blood pressure through multiple pathways, including increased potassium, calcium, magnesium, and fiber intake, enhanced sodium excretion, improved endothelial function, reduced oxidative stress, and decreased vascular resistance. In addition to reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure, the DASH diet has been associated with improvements in body weight, lipid profile, blood glucose regulation, and overall cardiovascular health. The review also highlights foods that should be limited or avoided, including high-sodium, high-fat, and processed foods, while emphasizing the importance of nutrient-rich, plant-based foods for optimal blood pressure control. Although strong scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of the DASH diet, long-term adherence remains a challenge because of cultural preferences, cost, and limited awareness. Promoting education, culturally appropriate dietary modifications, and practical nutrition counseling may improve adherence and enhance the diet's effectiveness. Overall, the DASH diet represents a safe, evidence-based, and cost-effective dietary strategy for preventing hypertension and reducing the global burden of cardiovascular disease.
